DHAR DISTRICT
Education Programmes

Rajiv Gandhi Prathmik Shiksha Mission

Civil Works

In 1994-95, 209 primary schools were without buildings, 150 schools had only one room, 1099 had two rooms and 188 had multiple rooms. By 1998-99, all 209 schools without buildings had been provided with buildings. This included 504 single room buildings and 146 two room-plus-veranda buildings. Thus, the number of rooms in the district increased from 2912 in 1994-95 to 3708 in 1998-99 thereby registering an increase of 27%.

The district redesigned the original single room building with use of low cost roofing material. As a result, 20% reduction in cost was achieved as the cost reduced from Rs.75,000 per building to Rs.60,000. This permitted construction of 25% more buildings over and above the planned target. A Nirmiti Kendra with HUDCO assistance was pressed into action for this purpose.

Further, 400 buildings for EGS centres were taken up in May 1998 and most of these have been either constructed or are nearing completion. The single room building design was further redesigned to reduce the cost by another Rs.10,000 to Rs.50,000. This noteworthy fall in cost was accompanied by an increase in the attractiveness of the building through use of coloured tiles as well as an improvement in the quality as the single sheet doors and windows were replaced with superior double panel pressed iron doors and windows.

Five ashram school buildings affording 50 seater residential accommodation have similarly been taken up with a low cost design which is also culturally integrated with the local tribal culture. The ashram building will be constructed at as low a cost as Rs.2.98 lacs whereas the traditional ashram building costs Rs.14 lacs.

All block headquarters have been provided with a building for a Block Resource Centre (BRC). The BRCs have been functioning effectively as nodal centres for training and resources at the block level.

The links below would give a clear picture of the efforts taken for promoting literacy in the district.
