Rajiv Gandhi Prathmik Shiksha
Mission
Bringing
the child to the school
Full enrolment was one of the prime objectives
of the Mission. Enrolment in primary schools on September 30, 1994
was 1.34 lacs against a population of 1.73 lacs in the primary school
age group. The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) was 75%. The district
set for itself a target of 120% GER to be achieved during the seven
year plan period.
As part of the mission based strategy mass movements and campaigns
were organised throughout the district. These included special campaigns
like "SCHOOL CHALO ABHIYAN", "PRAVESH UTSAV" (Entry Festival), "BAL
MEALS", "KALA JATTHAS", "NUKKAD DRAMAS", "PUPPET SHOWS".
A massive exercise for community-based planning to bring non-school
going children within the fold of school education was undertaken
in the months of June to August 1996, under the Lok Sampark Abhiyan
(Mass Contact Drive).
This drive was repeated in June and July 1997. Building on the base
developed as a result of these two drives, mass campaigns were carried
out to enroll girls not going to school from July to September 1997
and 1998 under the banner of "Mahila Shiksha Abhiyan".
As a result of these interventions, 66,000 additional children were
enrolled in three years thereby registering an increase of 50% in
number of children enrolled. In the same period, the GER increased
from 76% to 107%.
The special focus on enrolment of girls led to enrolment of 31,000
more girls thereby registering an increase of 58% in number of children
enrolled. In the same period, the GER increase from 62% to 92%.
