Mission
Keeping
the child in the school
After access and enrolment retaining the child
in the school was the third crucial objective of the Mission. In
1994-95, the retention rate was 56% against an enrolment of 1.34
lacs on September 30, 1994. The district set for itself the target
of achieving a retention rate of 90% by the end of the seven year
plan period.
An innovative programme based on extra-curricular activities was
specially designed for the district by the teachers themselves and
was launched in November 1996. Special training programmes targetting
teachers' motivation were imparted to the teachers of the district.
Educational toys and teaching aides were also developed by teachers
and class rooms were decorated the Shikshak Samakhya mode.
Bridge Language Inventory (BLI) was also developed to bridge the
gap between the dialect of the teacher and the learner. Teachers
were trained in the use of bridge language inventory and conversion
of words and sentences from their own dialect to the local Bhili
dialect and vice versa.
The retention rate was 56% on September 30, 1994. For girls this
was a meagre 39%. The Mission's interventions raised the overall
retention rate in the district to 79% and for girls alone it increased
to 62% in four years.
