Mission
SOPAN
In the world of the
handicapped
For
handicapped / disabled children special learning and enriching educational
facilities have been created in the district. SOPAN, a school
for deaf, mute and blind children was set up in the 1997-98 in Dhar
town. The school has limited residential facilities too. Currently,
22 handicapped children are studying in the school. 'Sopan' is a
sterling testimony to the fact that if people are committed, financial,
human, social and infrastructural resources pose no bar. It can
rightly be called a landmark of co-ordination and co-operation.
Presently it is running in the DIET building, teachers have been
taken on deputation from by education department, transport facilities
have been provided by Panchayat and Social Welfare department. Facility
for residence has been extended by the Red Cross and uniforms for
the students have been given by the Mission.
Coupled with the School for mentally disabled children set up under
the aegis of the District Red Cross Society, Dhar is the only place
other than major metropolises which has residential integrated education
facilities for the deaf, mute, blind as well as the mentally disabled.
For a small town with population less than a lac, this is no mean
achievement. The institution hopes to be able to accommodate disabled
students from neighbouring district soon.
